Hyeri: Did you enjoy it? For me, for example, if it was a similar character to the previous one, I would have kept thinking, 'What is there that I haven't done in the midst of all that?' But Jaeyi's expressions and speech patterns are new to me no matter what I do, so no matter what I do, it all feels right, and I think I was able to save a lot of energy.
GQ It might take more energy because it's the first time I've done something.
HR: When I just say, 'Just stay still like Jaeyi,' people say, "That's the first time I've seen that expression," so I thought it was more important to bring out Jaeyi from what I have rather than trying to do something more.
GQ Jaeyi is a friend whose emotional waves are flat on the surface.
HR: Right.
GQ Hyeri, whom I briefly met, was a three-dimensional character who was always happy when she was happy and then gloomy when she was gloomy. I guess the two of you are not that far apart.
HR: Yes. I don’t know if this is an example, but I remember what the local hair stylist said to me when I was on a business trip to Paris. It was in English, so I don’t know if I understood it well (laughs), but he said, “Why don’t you play music?” Other actors always play music, but why don’t you? I do my hair and makeup very quietly. I never saw how other friends do it, so I didn’t know. But when I think about it, I never play music. Since I’m going to be shooting anyway, and I’m going to be facing something, I tend to stay calm while I’m getting ready. I thought you might find this unusual.
GQ Yes. Usually, people play their favorite music to relieve tension or lift their spirits.
HR: I guess so. I didn’t know. So I asked our makeup artist if she really did that. She said she usually does. That was new to me.
GQ You're going to a running competition in May.
HR: Yes, May 10th. It's called After Dark Tour Seoul, and 7,000 female runners will be running together. It's such an honor for me to be the face of such an event, so even though I'm not familiar with running, I thought I'd give it a try.
GQ How are you preparing?
HR: I'm a beginner, so I run along the Han River with my coach once a week. Hmm... I'm having a hard time. Hahaha.
GQ That's right. I tried running once before and said I couldn't do it again.
HR: That's right. At that time, I was just at home and didn't exercise, so I thought, 'I should become a more productive person,' so I tied my shoelaces and went out, but I overdid it. I overdid it so much that my muscles hurt so badly, so I didn't really want to run a second time. So actually... (when I was offered to participate in the running competition) I was hesitant. But I really liked the idea. It's not common for 7,000 female runners to gather and run. And since it's the first time in 10 years, I thought it would feel like a festival, so I thought about it and decided to take on the challenge.
GQ It's a challenge.
HR: It's a really big challenge. I really don't walk. I usually don't walk, and I sit down. The reason I was worried at first is because I wanted to do well in what I do. So I worried a lot that I would be embarrassed. But once I actually started running, I didn't feel embarrassed. There's something like that, self... What is it?
GQ Reflection?
HR: No, it's more like a sense of accomplishment... I searched it up a while ago... Efficacy! It's like your self-efficacy goes up.
GQ What's that?
HR: It's about having faith in yourself and having a sense of accomplishment. I interpret it as self-efficacy, and it definitely goes up after you run. For example, I said, 'I'm going to run 3 kilometers today' and I achieved it. 'Then I can run 3 kilometers?' It becomes, 'I can do this?' In normal times, we try to think about 'I can do this?' in terms of something big. Am I able to finish this big project? Am I able to achieve something through this drama? But I felt that running is a sport where I can increase my efficacy with small goals. It also helps me not to give up on something. I have a strong competitive spirit, so when I set a goal for the day, I try to run it. I feel really good after running.
GQ As Hye-ri said, as I grow up and become an adult, there are times when I don't know what I'm good at. Rather, I feel like I'm just being vague. I feel like I'm not good at anything .
HR: Yeah, I compare myself.
GQ Sometimes I feel like I'm like, "Why am I like this?" but it's good that you feel self-efficacy through running.
HR: That's right. And the reason I feel fortunate that I'm running now is because when I was running without knowing what I was doing, I was someone who could be obsessed with records, but now that I'm gradually achieving my goals, I think I've become someone who thinks more about finishing my goals well rather than records.
GQ For example?
HR: I don't remember it well because I heard it from my coach while I was running (laughs), but I'm out of my mind when I run. But the thing I remember most is that I might overpace myself in a real situation. There will be a lot of people and the atmosphere will be exciting. It'll be exciting. So I might overpace myself more than I usually do, and it might get harder towards the end. So I'm practicing finding my pace right now. I'm a person who is greatly affected by my condition. I feel like I can really run, but there are days when I have a hard time running just 1 kilometer, and there are also days when I think, 'That's not bad,' even if I run 5 kilometers. It's really important to maintain my condition. I think I'm not good at that.
GQ How's Hyeri's pace right now?
HR: I'm in a mess right now because I haven't adjusted to the time difference since my trip to New York. Hmm... I'm like an 8-ton truck with broken brakes.
GQ Always? Or right now?
HR: Always. I live like an 8-ton truck with broken brakes, always.
GQ Why do you feel that way? You said earlier that you don't walk much and just stay at home... I think it's because the car is in 'P'.
HR: Hahahaha. When I'm resting. But my daily life is work. So to put it simply, I enjoy working the most.
GQ Work is everything, and it's like an 8-ton truck with broken brakes.
HR: Yes. Working is the most fun, and I feel that my work is greatly supported and loved, so I live my life thinking, 'What should I do? How can I repay you?', so I expressed it that way.
GQ What are some other questions Hyeri-style asks that don't use the word "happiness" but instead say, "Are you happy?"?
HR: Who are you most comfortable with?
GQ Is that the standard for happiness for Hyeri?
HR: Yes. When I ask, "Who are you most comfortable with?" some people might say, "I'm most comfortable when I'm alone," but for me, when I travel, who I'm with is more important than the destination. So I think that's the most important factor for me. I think that's similar to happiness.
GQ Who are you most comfortable with?
HR: (Park) Kyung-hye.
GQ How can you answer with such confidence?
HR: We spend a lot of our daily lives together and do the same work, so we talk a lot about work. And my feelings don't really affect this person, and this person's feelings don't really affect me, so I feel comfortable.
GQ I think Hyeri is usually affected by other people's feelings.
HR: I think she's the one who gets affected. If someone looks upset, you might think, "Why are you like that? Is it because of me?" or "Why are you mad at me for that now?" But if you know the reason, you can understand to some extent. Kyung-hye and I know each other so much that we can understand each other, that's how it is.
GQ You two met in the drama <Miss Lee>, right?
HR: Yes. I didn't like her that much back then. (Laughs) When we first met, she said to me, "Hello, unnie."
GQ Is Hyeri your unnie?
HR: So I said, "Am I your unnie?"
GQ I'm scared... (Laughs)
HR: No, when I call someone or decide on a title, I know (the information) and call them. But she just called me unnie, so I was like, "What?"
GQ First of all, Hyeri must have known my age.
HR: That must have been the day of the script reading, but before that, I searched everything up. I'm not usually very interested in people, so I'm going to do this because it's rude. At least I should know their names and what kind of works they've done, so I look them up.
GQ So how did you become so comfortable with each other?
HR: We're so different that it's hard to get along. I'm very cynical, and my unnie is very affectionate. But on the surface, I look affectionate and my sister looks very cynical. They are really opposites, but one thing is true. I have the trust that 'this person will completely believe me no matter what I say right now'. I've met a lot of people. So I think I have some sort of criteria for people, like MBTI. When we talk, I think, 'Oh, this person is like this', 'This person must have this kind of feeling'. But my sister doesn't have that.
GQ Does she make you act like Hyeri?
HR: Yes. For example, there's this thing where if someone says, "I'm not feeling well, so I'm going to be late," I'm like, 'What?' But my sister says, "No, no. I'm not feeling well, so I'm going to be late." I thought, 'How can she think like that? Is she an idiot?' But I learned from my sister. To truly believe.
GQ In the drama, when Jaeyi was skateboarding, he seemed so free. If Hyeri had an escape route like that, what would it be?
HR: I... um... This question is really hard because I don't really have anything I do. Like, I don't really have a hobby or anything I do in my free time. So it's really ambiguous to answer...
GQ You have to pace yourself.
HR: You only have to pace yourself when you're running, you know. When I'm working, I go without brakes, and when I'm resting, I put it on parking and maintain an average speed. Let's say 160 and 0? So I set my average speed to 80.
