Lee Hyeri "Skinship with Jung Soo-bin? I don't think it's unconventional" [Q&A]

Actress Lee Hyeri rewrote her life character through 'Friendly Rivalry'.

Here is the full Q&A with Lee Hye-ri on "Friendly Rivalry.
" Q. "
Friendly Rivalry" has been released in full. How do you feel?

"It feels like it was just yesterday when the first episode was released, but time really flies. I also enjoyed 'Fair Competition' together with the viewers while checking their reactions every time an episode was released. I was so happy that you enjoyed it."

Q. You transformed into Yoo Je-yi in "Friendly Rivalry" into a sharp and cold character, different from the characters you've played so far. What kind of character was Yoo Je-yi as interpreted by actress Lee Hye-ri (external + internal), and what did you focus on while acting?

"I think the character of Yoo Jae-ra is a very lonely character. He tries not to show his emotions, and in some ways, he seems to have difficulty empathizing with the emotions of others. I think that's where Jay's mysteriousness and coolness come from, and I'm glad that the viewers recognized the parts I expressed.

Also, Jay is a character who has to be almost perfect, kind, and popular, so I thought a lot about his external appearance."

Q. You garnered attention for your subtle relationship with actress Soo-bin Jung, your co-star. I'm curious about what you paid attention to for the subtle emotional line between Jay and Seul-gi, and how you worked with actress Soo-bin.

"Jay's attitude toward Seul-gi gradually changes to become more sincere as the drama progresses, and I thought a lot about how to express that process well. The purpose of approaching Seul-gi at first was to find her father's weakness, but I thought that Seul-gi would be the first friend to show sincerity to Jay, who has lived his whole life in competition. And I think I naturally thought, "I want to protect this friend who pretends to be strong but is very delicate."

"I think the chemistry between Seulgi and Jay was perfect because actress Soobin trusted and relied on me a lot on set."

Q. In addition to the skinship with actress Jung Soobin, there were many daring scenes, such as a smoking scene, a club scene, and a kissing scene. Are there any interesting episodes related to that?

"When we were filming, I think we didn't think it was daring because we were just acting out a part of the script. In the beginning of the club scene, I wore a pink wig, and I was surprised because the wig suited me better than I thought. And I was surprised that the bathroom in Jay's room was a set just for one scene."

Q. I heard that there were many scenes that were born from actress Lee Hye-ri's ideas and ad-libs on set. Is there a scene that you remember the most?

"Actually, there weren't that many ad-libs, and I just tried to express most of what was in the script.

But if I had to pick a scene that's memorable, it's the scene when Jay confesses his feelings while talking about Cain and Abel when Seul-gi comes to see him after seeing his sister's death. In the original script, that scene was Jay breaking down in front of Seul-gi because of Jenna's death. But I told the director, "This is the first time we're showing Jay breaking down, and I hope it's not because of Jenna." So he changed it to a scene where Jay calmly talks about his feelings for the first time and Seul-gi comforts him. I was happy that many viewers liked it."

Q. Is there a scene or line that Lee Hye-ri chose as the best?

"My personal favorite scene is the one in the last episode where Jay says to Seulgi, "The medicine I gave you for the midterms was actually vitamins." I like that scene because it shows Jay's feelings for Seulgi.

The memorable line is "Then why did you touch my stuff without any sense?" That's the scene where I worried the most about how I could make myself look worse while filming."

Q. You've earned many nicknames in this drama. Prince, Guilty (Guilty Person Yoo Jae), Jaycopath, Benz Girl, etc. Which nickname do you like the most?

"I actually never thought I would be given this many nicknames, but I think I've got the most nicknames out of all the characters I've played. I like Guilty the most. It's a nickname that fits Jay perfectly but is also deadly."

Q. Jay's attitude towards Seulgi and his attitude towards his friends including Joo Yeri (played by Kang Hyewon) and Choi Kyung (played by Oh Woori) are subtly different, which makes it even more fun to watch. How was the atmosphere on set and how did you work with the other actors?

"Actually, in the drama, Jay doesn't have any attachment or interest in anyone other than Seulgi. That's why he seems kind to everyone, but I think the viewers found Jay's indifferent and cold attitude funny.

However, in reality, his friends around him are essential to completing Jay's character, so their reactions were very important. Whenever I said my lines, Yeri (played by Kang Hyewon) and Kyung-yi (played by Oh Woori) reacted perfectly, which made Jay's character seem more appealing. Since the two actors are such hard-working and talented friends, it was easy for me to focus on Jay's character."

Q. The ending of 'Friendly Rivalry' was Jay leaving in search of freedom. Do you think it was a happy ending?

"Jay thought there was only one way to escape the suffocating environment. I think it was a happy ending because we showed that in Jay's last moments. I think the viewers were sad, but on the other hand, I think they felt a sense of relief. And I think it was very Jay-like that he only revealed his existence to Seulgi."

Q. Lastly, please say a word to the viewers who loved 'Friendly Rivalry'.

"To the viewers who have watched 'Friendly Rivalry' so far, I sincerely thank you.

I had so much fun, was happy, and was so happy to be able to play such a charming character that I wondered if I would ever meet a character like Jay again in my acting career.

I think I received more love than I loved Jay, so I'm also very happy as actress Lee Hye-ri. I will continue to act more diligently without forgetting this feeling. 'Good Competition' may be over, but I hope it will remain in your hearts for a long time. Thank you!"
