"Masturbation scenes can be uncomfortable for viewers. I thought a lot about how to express it without feeling uncomfortable or ashamed. Rather than feeling embarrassed, I did it confidently."
On the 13th, we met actress Oh Woo-ri, who appeared in the STUDIO X+U drama 'Friendly Rivalry', at the Ten Asia building in Jung-gu, Seoul. This is what she said about her unconventional masturbation scene in the drama.
In the drama, Oh Woo-ri plays Choi Kyung, who is always in second place, pushed aside by Yoo Je-yi. Although she appears to be a model student on the outside, she is a two-faced character who suffers from an inferiority complex on the inside. Oh Woo-ri has appeared in Netflix's 'Murderer's Difficulty' (2024) and the film 'Veteran 2' (2024). She majored in film arts and has been working as a director since 2019.
In her first interview after the show ended, Oh Woori said, "I received more love than I expected. I'm flustered. I looked up a lot of Naver Open Talk and blog reviews. I was happy that viewers liked the supporting actors as well as the main actors."
Oh Woori was cast in 'Friendly Rivalry' through an audition. He said, "When I first read the script, I felt it was new. There were parts about Choi Kyung that were different from the existing webtoons. It was a more colorful and unique character. The director also said that he wanted to have a lot of kitschy and unique aspects."
When acting, she focused on the duality of the character. Oh Woori emphasized, "Choi Kyung is intuitively sensitive and prickly, but she has a weak side inside her." She said, "It stems from an inferiority complex, but when you get to know her, she's righteous and kind. So I expressed that she's cute but also has a sloppy and soft side. I wanted to show that these various aspects seem contradictory, but they're actually part of the character."
He said, "It was just like my real high school days," and "I became sensitive because I wanted to get good grades during the college entrance exam competition. I even wore horn-rimmed glasses like Choi Kyung. I had a prickly personality, shouting, 'Be quiet!' when my friends were talking. I was a model student that teachers liked."

Oh Woori also talked about her chemistry with the lead actors of 'Friendly Rivalry'. He showed off his fiery rivalry with his friend and rival Yoo Je-yi (played by Hye-ri) and expressed his gratitude for Hye-ri's attitude on set, saying, "She's like a mother bird taking care of her babies. She's like a leader who takes care of us when we're having a hard time." "The character of Yoo Je-yi is a charismatic character, and my sister is like that in real life. She gave me a lot of acting advice on set." She and Kang Hye-won (played by Joo Ye-ri) were close friends despite their bickering on set. Ouri praised her, saying, "We were like Choi Kyung and Joo Ye-ri in real life. I tend to be shy and nervous on set. Whenever that happens, Hye-won jokes around and relieves my tension. She's more charming than I thought and really cute as a person."
Then, she laughed and said, "At first, we thought each other had MBTI scores of I (introvert). But Hye-won said she was E (extrovert). She seemed kind from first impression, but she was brighter than I thought. I was shy, but Hye-won said she wasn't shy, so I could feel the difference in our personalities."
About Jung Soo-bin, who played the role of Woo Seul-gi, she said, "She was a healing center itself," and "She gave me a lot of compliments and encouragement while filming. She was like a 'self-esteem booster.' For example, she'd say, 'Sister, you're doing well. You're doing so well, so why are you worried?' That gave me strength."

In the drama, Oh Woo-ri witnesses Woo Do-hyeok (Woo Seul-gi's father) and Yoo Je-na (Yoo Je-i's older sister) having sex while masturbating at school after school. Regarding this scene, he said, "I was worried before going in, but once we started filming, I wasn't embarrassed or worried," and explained, "I knew that if the director said, 'Everyone, be quiet!', it would be burdensome. I didn't feel embarrassed throughout the filming, and I reminded him that it was acting, so I did it with a sense of professionalism. During the rehearsal, everyone except the director left."
Jung Soo-bin and Hye-ri's passionate bathtub kiss scene was also a hot topic. In an interview, Jung Soo-bin said, "Kang Hye-won and Oh Woo-ri were surprised when they saw the kiss scene." Oh Woo-ri gave an unexpected answer to the question of why. He recalled, "I didn't know they would be so pretty. I was impressed by how well they acted as a couple who truly loved each other," and "I also thought that they could show more of their lovey-dovey scenes. The chemistry between them was so good."
Ouri said about the final episode that was released on the 6th, "I still can't forget Woo Seul-gi's last expression. Looking at that expression, I concluded it myself as a 'happy ending.' I cried a lot when Yoo Je-yi disappeared, and I was really sad on set too. It felt like a small spark was lit in Woo Seul-gi. It was an open ending that didn't feel like the end but rather a new beginning, so it left a deeper impression."

Oh Woori, who is also famous for her 'Chun Woo-hee look-alike', debuted in 2017 and has been acting for 9 years now. The genre she wants to challenge herself with in the future is 'thriller'. She said, 'Friendly Rivalry' was also a thriller, but my role in it was actually closer to a comedic character. I think it would be fun to play a psychopathic serial killer who is strong but has a sense of weight, like Jeon Jong-seo in the movie 'Call'."
